To believe in Christian Science, you must accept the numerous interpretations of the Bible by
Mary Baker Eddy. Take for instance, the premise of Romans 3:10, "As it is written, there is
none righteous, no not one". This is a major theme of the Bible, that we are all sinners. But not
in Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy tells us that we are sinners only as long as we believe in the lie.
That in Christian Science we need to rise above this false belief.
Mary Baker Eddy was quick to point out that she thought that the Bible was flawed. And she
was then able to give her readers her (correct) explanation of the true spiritual meaning and
interpretation. If this is true, than you have just raised Mrs. Eddy's status to that of a prophet.
An interesting book that includes this discussion is "The Destiny of the Mother Church" by Bliss
Knapp. This book, which is sanctioned by the Church, should be required reading for every
Christian Scientist. Although it was an embarrassment when it was released in the mid 1990's,
it was nonetheless embraced by the Mother Church. It's author, who was a dedicated Christian
Scientist with roots that went back to Many Baker Eddy's days, put a stipulation in his will which
gave the Mother Church 100 million dollars if the church sanctioned his book. The church took
the deal.
So there you have it, the official statement from The Mother Church, that Mary Baker Eddy was
indeed a prophet. Although reluctantly said, they are indeed firm in their statement by their
acknowledgement of "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures" as a true interpretation of
the Bible. According to most Bible scholars, prophets have not been around since the days of
the old testament, so this is quite remarkable.
But I'm not buying it.
