The scientific statement of being reads as follows:
There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual
The basis of Christian Science is the “Scientific Statement of Being”.
As a child, I heard The scientific statement of being every Sunday. I remember trying to make sense of it, even then. The fact that this life was an illusion was hard to grasp. But I knew that it had to be true, because Mary Baker Eddie said so, and she knew the truth about our true existence.
I have come to learn that the Bible is the only authority.
“There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter”. Everything that we see, feel, and touch in this material world is an illusion. As a youth I did my best to accept this, but ultimately was never totally convinced. I now know that this is not biblical, no where in the Bible is this told.
“All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all.”. Mary Baker Eddie told us that only Mind (God) and it’s manifestation (us, as His children) exist. We are all God’s perfect children.
“Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal.”. Mary Baker Eddie reinforces her statement here, but adds that our material existence is temporal. So she goes from saying everything we see is a lie, to then saying it is only temporary.
“Spirit is God”. While it is true that God is a spirit, the reverse isn’t biblical. The Bible talks about Satan and demons which are spirits, but they certainly aren’t Gods.
” and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual”. Man’s true being is spiritual. This statement is totally in agreement with the Bible.
The scientific statement of being is a perfect example of how Mary Baker Eddie wove a web of deception, mixing biblical truth with her own flawed theology.
